The European network of expertise on AI deployment in healthcare

Across Europe, institutions implementing AI in clinical practice run into the same obstacles. Compass AI brings together the professionals doing that work, consolidating their experience into practical guidance so that the next centre benefits.

What we are building

A European network of experts

Healthcare professionals, AI developers, hospital managers, IT specialists, patient representatives, regulatory experts, health economists, and ethicists, brought together for their expertise of implementing AI in clinical practice.

Meet the experts

Best practices for AI deployment

We develop practical guidance for institutions navigating AI deployment in routine care. Our evidence-based guidelines extend the FUTURE-AI framework to the realities of deployment, validated in real-world settings.

Learning together across Europe

We make deployment experience visible across Europe. The Compass AI platform will show what centres implemented, how it went and the evidence behind it. The network's findings inform policy at European and national level.

Deployment is the hard part

AI performs well in research environments. Bringing it into routine clinical care is a different challenge, and most institutions work through it alone, with little shared guidance to draw on.

Does it perform on our equipment, with our patients?

Does it fit into the workflow, or does the workflow bend around it?

Who pays, and how is that justified?

What does AI Act compliance require in practice?

Who is accountable when the system is wrong?

Is anyone checking it still works six months from now?

The European Commission’s study on AI deployment (2025) found these obstacles recurring across countries, care settings and specialties.

Compass AI guides deployment across every theme.

The other flagship, the European AI-powered advanced screening centres, works alongside us — generating real-world evidence from centres deploying AI in cancer and cardiovascular screening, which feeds into the guidance we develop.

“The European Commission welcomes the launch of Compass AI, one of the flagship projects underpinning the Apply AI Strategy. Compass AI will support the safe, efficient and effective integration of artificial intelligence into clinical practice, delivering tangible benefits for patients across Europe.”

Compass AI is built on the expertise of its members

Together they form a network across Europe covering every perspective that deployment touches: clinical, technical, regulatory, economic, ethical and the patient’s. At the core of that network is the Community of Experts, professionals with direct experience of deploying AI in healthcare. A Community Advisory Board guides the direction of the work.

Membership is by invitation. Express your interest in joining, and tell us briefly what you work on, at info@compassai.eu.
