Our mission is to advance the safe and effective adoption of AI in European healthcare. At the heart of the work is a multidisciplinary community of experts: healthcare professionals, patient representatives, AI developers, IT specialists, hospital managers, regulatory experts, ethicists, economists and policymakers. Together they identify the challenges, the enablers and the practical strategies behind successful AI implementation.
Compass AI is a flagship initiative of the European Commission’s Apply AI Strategy, launched in October 2025 with a mandate to build a European network of expertise on AI deployment in healthcare. It is co-funded by the European Union under the EU4Health Programme. Its full name is COMPASS-AI: Community Of Multidisciplinary Professionals Advancing Safe and Successful AI Implementation in Clinical Practice.
Compass AI builds on FUTURE-AI, the established framework for trustworthy AI in healthcare. The community’s insights become best-practice deployment guidelines, validated through four pilot studies across different European countries, health systems and clinical settings. Testing this broadly is what makes the guidelines adaptable to varied healthcare systems and cultural environments. We pay particular attention to cancer care, and to healthcare in remote regions and low-resource settings.
Beyond the guidelines, Compass AI is building an interactive platform that consolidates and maps deployment experience from across Europe, and an education programme to raise AI literacy among the people who use and govern these systems. What the network learns feeds into policy recommendations for the European Commission and EU Member States, to accelerate sustainable, large-scale AI adoption.
